Still, Chaotic Century was the first foray into storytelling with the Zoids toyline. The series was able to establish the lore of Zoids: where the creatures come from, why they exist, what their relationship with people is.
No other Zoid series has such straightforward lore development as Chaotic Century. Zoids model kits already existed when the series began, so there was already some idea of what they looked like and how they would appear in the series. But there are a lot of Zoids in the series, and making sure that they all look distinctive and interesting is really important, not to mention making sure they look like they can move around.
The careful adaptation of toys to anime creatures was so important to the success of the series. It made us really feel like the Zoids were both awesome to look at and were living things, something we could connect with as viewers. Zoids: Chaotic Century also had the best advantage of any of the Zoids series because it was the first one to tell a story using Zoids. The series follows a Gundam style war drama plot, with the battles fought with mechas, but since it takes place on another planet, with different kinds of technology and cultural implications, it felt like a totally different series.
There are a lot of really good battles throughout the Zoids franchise, especially in series where there are less wartime battling and more sports combat fighting. But Chaotic Century battles really take the cake.
Hiltz pilots the Death Stinger at first before being defeated by the Guardian Force, after which he retreats to Zoid Eve and resurrects the True Death Saurer and fuses with the beast. Hiltz's subordinate and another ancient Zoidian , Reese operates primarily in psychological warfare and sometimes literal Mind Control.
She serves as a recurring threat to the Guardian Force throughout the series up until Hiltz decides he no longer needs her, after which she joins Raven. She also has her own oragnoid, Specular.
The beast of destruction. An unstoppable juggernaut from the past. The Death Saurer is without a doubt the most dangerous and most terrifying Zoid in the series. Originally a weapon that was created by the ancient Zoidans, the Death Saurer is responsible for wiping out the ancient Zoidan culture and as a result illicits an appropriate Oh, Crap! The Death Saurer was resurrected by Gunter Prozen and was to be used to conquer the known world with its incredible power. However thanks to the combined efforts of heroes from both the Guylos Empire and the Helic Republic the beast was destroyed and Prozen was defeated, finally putting the beast of legend down.
Until the end of Guardian Force however. It turns out that the Death Saurer that Prozen resurrected was nothing but a cheap imitation and was not the True Death Saurer which was the actual Zoid that wiped out the ancient Zoidans. A former soldier of the Empire that was dishonorably discharged and became a bandit as a result. Rosso is the leader of a group of bandits called the "Desert Arcobaleno Gang" and is desperately looking for a way to prove his worth to the Empire in order to retrieve his former position in the military.
His gang serves as antagonists for Van's group early in the series before the conflict of the Empire and the Helic Republic come into play. After being set up as a Patsy yet again for the Empire, Rosso is imprisoned but then later broken free by his gang who then decide to give up trying to rejoin the empire and to just kidnap the crown prince Rudolph for a huge ransom.
Rosso and Viola end up bonding with Rudolph and protecting him from Prozen's assassination attempts. They then help him escape with Van when Raven comes hunting. Rosso reappears later in the season as one of flying aces of the Helic Republic, the Red Masked Baron of Wings piloting a Stormsworder. Rosso pilots several Zoids, starting with a Red Horn in his first appearances, then briefly an Iron Kong after busting out of jail and then his Storm Sworder for the rest of the series.
A former Imperial soldier and the second in command of Rosso's gang, Viola is a crackshot aerial plot that serves as another antagonist to Van and the others at the start of the series. Viola hails from the hidden village of Mt. Iselina which has remained neutral in the conflict between the Helic Republic and the Guylos Empire.
Viola, however, was not satisfied with doing nothing but hiding in their village while a war waged on, so she left the village to join the Empire in order to make a difference and protect her younger sister Rosa.
At some point Viola also left the military, either of her own free will or through a dishonorably discharge like Rosso. Viola is fiercely devoted to Rosso and would do anything for him, including break him out of prison. After Rosso gives up on trying to get his old position in the military back, they decide to kidnap Prince Rudolph for a huge ransom, only to end up saving him from Prozen's assassination attempts instead and helping him escape with Van when Raven comes to kill him.
Viola only pilots aerial Zoids, her first being a red Redler and her second being a Storm Sworder. An elderly scientist that is considered to be the foremost expert on Zoids and their history, Doctor D. It turns out that Doctor D. Later Doctor D. Doctor D. In Guardian Force , Doctor D. Rob Herman is the son of the last two Presidents of the Helic Republic, the former, his father having died and been replaced by the current, his mother, President Camford. Despite having such a powerful and influential heritage, Rob Herman's military career is based on merit and hard work, not relying on his family's status to rise through the ranks.
After that, Van, Fiona, Irvine and Moonbay attempt to stay out of the war. However, Van ends getting involved when he meets the Guylos ace pilot, Raven , whom he quickly develops a grudge against after witnessing Raven's brutal behaviour and hatred of Zoids.
Although he attempts to fight Raven, he proves no match for him in their first battle. Van later challenges Raven again, and loses once more. In this battle, Zeke suffers near-fatal damage, though Van manages to save him.
During this time the Imperial Army manages to march farther and farther into Republican territory but are eventually stopped by the deployment of the Republic's new Gojulas. Van and the others eventually reach the Republic's capital in hopes of finding information about Zoid Eve, but only end up getting caught up in the Empire's assault on the city.
During the siege, Van is finally able to defeat Raven, the duel ending with the destruction of Raven's Zaber Fang. The war is stopped when the Empire's Crown Prince Rudolph orders a ceasefire, although his advisor, Prozen, refuses to give up on conquering the Republic, and so attempts to assassinate the prince. His attempt is foiled by the bandits Rosso and Viola, who kidnap the prince in an attempt to blackmail the Empire.
During this time, Prozen finds the remains of the Death Saurer , attempts to revive it, and also creates the Geno Saurer for Raven to use.
During this time it is revealed that Fiona is actually an "Ancient Zoidian", a member of a race that existed long before humans came to the Planet Zi. Rudolph, separated from Rosso and Viola after a fight with Raven, joins Van and his friends who try to take him to the Empire's capital Guygalos to stop Prozen from taking over the Empire and restarting the war.
During this time, parts of the Imperial Army both those loyal to Prozen and those manipulated into fighting try to stop them. Although Rudolph is returned to the capital, Prozen attempts to use the revived Death Saurer to take control, which goes on a rampage and nearly destroys the capital.
Although the forces of the Empire and Republic combined are powerless to stop it, with Van's help, they are able is able to destroy the Death Saurer and apparently kill Prozen in the process.
Rudolph is then crowned the Emperor and peace finally starts to settle between the Empire and Republic, but Van and Fiona don't take part in the celebration and instead leave to find Zoid Eve. Organoids are rare types of Zoids that are barely left over from the Ancient Zoidian's reign on Zi.
There are only four known to exist by the end of the series, one of which was destroyed and rebuilt. Chaotic Century was originally broadcast from to in Japan and to in the United States.
