This is a fantastic alternative to Mt Si , with literally almost identical mileage and elevation gain, nearly the same view you can see each peak from the summit of the other and even the same parking pass. However, the steepness of the trail remains reasonably throughout the hike and there are some views along the way to keep things interesting. One thing to watch out for on this trail is that many sections of it are quite rocky. This hike is snow free a bit sooner than some view hikes in the I corridor, so you can generally do this hike starting in June Bandera Mountain is another awesome view hike that melts out by June. I would recommend saving this hike for a clear day when you can see the view!
Take Exit 38 and go right at the bottom of the ramp coming from Seattle or Bellevue, go left if coming from Ellensburg or Snoqualmie Pass. Go up a narrow trail through salmonberry bushes to a wide gravel trail.
Go right here and it will bring you up to the Iron Horse Trail, another wide gravel trail. Go right again. The Woods are Lovely, Dark and Deep.
Mount Si. Move the body, still the mind. Wild Salmonberries on the trail. A Lovely Log. Snag Flat to the Summit. Christmas Day Snowglobe on Mt Si. Insane Blues as payoff for climb. Mt Si the day before Snowmageddon. Hiked in Dark to get Mount Si sunrise. Mountain Goat. You may not be like the guy who summited twice before we made one round trip.
You may not be training for Rainier. And you might stop at the broad viewpoint below the summit rather than making the final, rocky push to the tiptop. No matter what, finishing a hike like this is something to be proud of.

Recommend hiking it during the week if possible; the weekends can be extremely busy. If hiking the Mt. We ran this in the snow and ice and it was actually a blast!!!! And really beautiful. Being a couple of idiots from Kansas on vacation we came a little over prepared and naive to what was about to unfold. The highest I have ever been out doors this isn't innuendo is hurricane ridge over in the olympics but I drove up that and walked around, this was a whole different beast.
A beautiful trail of non stop switchbacks, it was soggy from the rain but my oh my was it still breathtaking. At the top although I wanted to my girlfriend did not want to summit the haystack which was probably for the best seeing as it was beginning to sleet. Although I missed out on the normally amazing view which were shrouded in clouds and mist it made for an awesome atmosphere. Overall it wasn't too busy but the weather and the fact that it was a weekday probably contributed to that.
Great hike can't wait to do it again. I just did this hike yesterday. I spent a total of 4 hours on the trail and a little over an hour in the car, making it a perfect hike to do on a weekend morning.
The trail is well maintained, travels through some beautiful forest, and rewards you with sweeping views when you reach the top.
